Happy (Japanese) New Year

So I'm soon to start in with the festivities for the New Year with inlaws. Will I be able to post before the end of the year? I don't know. So just in case I am too overwhelmed later, let me wish you a Happy New Year right now.

And provide you with a link that explains some of the Japanese New Year traditions.

A happy new year to you as well, Jessica -- have some osechi for me! I was in Nijiya Market (in San Francisco's Japantown) yesterday afternoon and it was packed to the rafters with people shopping for Oshogatsu. I was strangely happy to be caught in the midst of all that jostling. Enjoy celebrating and all good wishes for 2012!

Akemashite Omedetou, Mari! Hope you had some toshikoshi soba or some kind of long noodles to guarantee your long life. Love Nijiya Market (there was one in SoCal when I lived there).

I did not eat any osechi on New Year's Day, but I did have noodles. I should make a point of preparing some kind of traditional dish next year. Thank you for your blog -- it's one of my favorites and I check it nearly every day -- and I wish you well in the coming year!

We went to a hotel this year, so nobody had to make the osechi but it was all available in a giant buffet, and we could pick and choose the bits we wanted without hurting anyone's feelings.

Thanks for your kind comments about my blog. Your encouragement really helps me when I wonder why I do this...
