Four Poems at Poets for Science

I have four poems up now at Jane Hirshfield's Poets for Science Global Gallery. Tons of science-related poems over there. Check them out.

Here are mine:

Radium Girls, first published in The Westchester Review

Darwin's Conjecture, first published in The Threepenny Review

Mendeleev's Mandala, the title poem of my second book

Lagrange's Problem, first published in Diagram, and included in my first book, The Insomniac's Weather Report

I'm hoping to have a few more, once I've checked on the rights, so if interested, stay tuned.

Asian Poetry: Me?

Just found my first book The Insomniac's Weather Report on the Barnes & Noble Asian Poetry Page, alongside Basho, Tagore, Li Po, Sam Hamill, Jane Hirshfield, the Bhagavad Gita, and more.

How exciting!

Rewinding the Clock At Tweetspeak

Every Day Poems, a feature at Tweetspeak Poetry, is featuring a poem from my first book, The Insomniac's Weather Report, today. Thanks to Richard Maxson and everyone at Tweetspeak  for rewinding the clock to bring back "What You Measure If You Use Water as a Clock."

Tweetspeak Micro

New microreview at Tweetspeak, but it's a throwback to The Insomniac's Weather Report. So glad that book hasn't been forgotten!

And I share the space with poet Michalle Gould, who also has a poem coming out from Motionpoems Season 6 this year.

The Insomniac Shovels Coal

Alison Taverna of Coal Hill Review (an imprint of Autumn House Press) really GETS my work. In a wonderful review of The Insomniac's Weather Report she has truly entered my world. This is a review that makes me feel heard, as when Taverna says, "Our world, our bodies, these poems, are fugues.? Thanks so much to Alison and to Christine Stroud.

Read the whole review here. YAY!

The Insomniac Goes Wild!

Thanks to Amie Longmire and Wild: A Quarterly for this generous review of The Insomniac's Weather Report.

Wild: A Quarterly was a dream to work with; other poets looking for review opportunities should contact them. And of course, send them your best work for their journal!

Beat Insomnia!

My kids, for whom English hovers between a first and a second language, sometimes confuse the verbs "beat" (as in "beat the opponent") with "win" (as in "win the game"). For example they might say "I won him" when they meant "I beat him."

So forgive me now for telling you that this blog post cannot tell you how to beat insomnia. Instead, it's here to tell you how to win a signed copy of The Insomniac's Weather Report. You can do that by entering my Goodreads giveaway here. The deadline is June 30th.

Good luck!

The Insomniac is Available Now!

The new Isobar Press edition of The Insomniac's Weather Report is now available at Amazon, Amazon Japan, Amazon UK, and directly from me. If you want a signed copy, please contact me via the contact link at my website, or leave me a comment on this blog with an address or URL by which I can contact you. (The first 20 people who contact me directly will get free shipping anywhere in the world.)

In the meantime, you can download an excerpt from the book here.

Thanks!

And thanks to Paul Rossiter of Isobar Press for making this edition available in almost no time at all!

[Backstory: Some of you may recall the The Insomniac's Weather Report was first published in 2011 by Three Candles Press, as the winner of their First Book Award. Unfortunately, Three Candles closed abruptly only months after beginning to issue copies, so this book languished in a state of suspension until Paul Rossiter rescued it earlier this year, winning my true gratitude. Poets whose manuscripts have suffered similar setbacks, have hope!]

The Insomniac is Back!!!!!!

I have some exciting news: my first full-length poetry collection, The Insomniac's Weather Report, is back!!!!!!!  After winning the three candles press First Book Award, The Insomniac's Weather Report subsequently went out of print when the publisher suddenly closed down (after more than 10 years of service to poets and readers). It was a devastating setback, but happily fortune has reversed itself with the following good news.

Thanks to Paul Rossiter's Japan-based Isobar Press, a brand new edition of The Insomniac's Weather Report will be available in June 2014. Anyone wishing to preorder a copy can send me an email from my website. It will also be available on Amazon at a later date. I'll give you more details as the project progresses.

Isobar Press is, in its own words, interested in "work in English by Japanese and non-Japanese authors who live (or have lived) in Japan, or who write on Japan-related topics. The focus, at least initially, will be on poetry, including both original writing and translations from the Japanese." This is a welcome addition to the poetry universe, and an exciting development for me. Three cheers for Isobar!

Snowstorm, Revisited

An older poem of mine, Snowstorm, is currently featured Kara Daly's poemplease.com website. The poem originally appeared in the Beloit Poetry Journal, and later was in my book The Insomniac's Weather Report.

Thanks, Kara, for reviving a seasonally appropriate poem!

Big Poetry Giveaway Results!

National Poetry Month has once again drawn to a close. I hope everyone celebrated in ways that stimulated their creativity and pleased their souls.

I'd like to thank the 23 people who participated in the Big Poetry Giveaway here at my blog. Don't hold your breath any longer--the results are in! Using a random number generator, I have been able to determine the winners of the two books of poetry I'm giving away this year.

And they are:

Renee, who has won a copy of my book, The Insomniac's Weather Report,

and

Jessica (not me, a different Jessica!), who has won the California anthology, Yuba Flows, featuring (among other poets) the very talented Judy Halebsky.

Congratulations to Renee and Jessica, and thanks to everybody for participating!

PS Renee and Jessica, you each should have received  an email from me inquiring about a physical address to send your book to. If you haven't, please let me know.
