To celebrate National Poetry Month in April, the Academy of American Poets is hosting a project of letter writing, inspired by Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet. In a bit of a twist, young poets are being invited to write to more experienced poets, in the form of the chancellors of the Academy. This project, the Dear Poet Project, is open to students from grades 7 - 10. Teachers who wish to use this activity in the classroom are even provided with a suggested lesson plan. Select letters will receive answers and may also show up on the website Poets.org.
