Linguistic Diversity in Japan

I'm working on a paper (for my applied linguistics course) about the Ainu language in Hokkaido, and I happened to run across this blog posting by someone called Hashi at the blog Tofuku. This post is called "Japan's OTHER Languages" and it highlights 8 languages found in Japan. There's even a link to a man speaking Miyako. Enjoy!

Hi Jessica -- this is fascinating! Thanks for posting. I've been scarce online of late -- busy studying, but hope to be through the gate soon. I think of you and hope all goes well for you in Kobe.

I know, Mari, I find this completely fascinating too. Especially since it was the official position of the Japanese government (until a decade or two ago) that there were no minorities and no minority languages in Japan.

Good luck with your exam! Your diligence is inspiring.

Ugh. Denial is powerful! I'm so glad to see this willful distortion getting corrected. And thanks for your good wishes. My hope is that my "diligence" (which has plenty of holes) does the job. Stay tuned...
